Achill-Henge revisited

I returned again recently to Achill – Henge to see if my feelings about the place had changed I was also strangely attracted to the henge and have spent hours wondering about the energy in the place. I entered the circle of stones again and found familiar but strange feelings, a sense of another world the place was different though somebody has painted faces on each pillar starting with some vague outlines and finishing with an anime like face with a green eye and an odd hue and dark expression. I wondered how my dog would take it, he was freaked out, his bark reverberating around the stone circle made his head wobble from side to side as he tried to figure out what was going on.

The mental dolls from the summer were now replaced with rocks shaped like old mountain Cairns and a lot of the graffiti was now covered by the evolving circular face you can see in the pics. I think it is beginning to take shape as a permanent sculpture or gaining fame as vandal art, regardless of your opinion about whether this is appropriate in such a beautiful place, at some level you have to admire its sheer audacity and the design. The cost of this is probably not that much on the environment and it cannot be seen from public roads you need to go and find it in the middle of a bog, that might not seem hard until you visit Achill and realise how big and beautiful this bog is. However the cost to the local inhabitants in keel will probably mean that someone has to die by driving their car in to the hole filled with metal spikes that was left in the middle of the village so that the builder could off his pent-up anger and rage at the Irish government, this is how Irish local councils usually deal with things wait till it’s too late and then take action on the basis that it won’t happen again, I only hope that this does not happen but fear it will.

To add to the weirdness of the misty morning a local sheep farmer decided that Dublin City boys should get the fuck off the Island and decided block in the car, which of course in his crazed mind would prompt us to bolt as soon as he had let us go, but in our minds made the time even more surreal, we slowly left….
