Thought I would share some of the foodie sights from Laos sorry I can’t bring the smell, sizzle or taste but your mind will hopefully do some that on this short trip.
“Feu” or noodle soup with crispy pork, or just about anything you want added is what I consider to be the king of breakfasts and with a glass of sweetened Lao coffee and your ready for any adventure. I have added a few pic’s from my favourite noodle shop in Vientiane, what I really like about “feu” apart from the taste is that it is always prepared freshly – noodles at the ready, broth added and then the meat, bean sprouts, Coriander, spring onions etc, handed to you and then you add the nam pla , prik, soy, sugar, vinegar, dried chilli’s or whatever is at hand.
The coffee is delicious, a good dollop of sweetened condensed milk is added to a glass and then through a sieve or sock the coffee is poured over it and you get what is in the picture.
A “cafe Lao” is strangely the worst grade of coffee and that is not meant as an insult to the vendors, as a street food it doesn’t need to be anything else and any bitterness is removed by the milk also served with various types of tea to wash it down.
I have brought it home and in my opinion it does not travel well outside its home country, so go to Laos and try some.
Some of the other great foods shown here include Laab a kind of spicy minced meat, usually pork (moo) or chicken (gai) although I have had it with duck and also various offal. When I think of the crap we class as fast food in the west ,well it just doesn’t compare to this on any level, it is just a bad filler.

Love the pics, I had the privilege of tasting such dishes with the help of Diarmuids cultured experience 🙂
